Terminus Lux

After seeing another outstanding 18-inch dob, Martin Lewis’s Fossil Light. I thought I had better come up with a half decent name. At the time I was making my scope I was reading through The Book of the New Sun by Gene Wolfe.

If you do not know the series, read them, they are excellent. The “hero” of the story is a Severian, a disgraced journeyman torturer, who has in his possession a sword called Terminus Est, which as I understand it translates to “This is the end”. So I wanted to come up with a suitably meaningful, cryptic, symbolic and romantic name along the same lines.

As you know telescopes, or more specifically the back of your eyeball, are where photons from across the universe end their journey after many, many years. I.e. this instrument is the end of light. I hope no Latin scholars mind my interpretation of the meaning but in my mind Terminus Lux encapsulates “the end of light”.
